Today is World Ocean Day so we wanted to take the opportunity to talk about how at Pujadó Solano we do our bit to protect the oceans by supporting sustainable fishing.
The MSC sustainable fishing seal
To do this, we buy fish from fisheries certified with the MSC (Marine Stewardship Council) sustainable fishing seal. This is an international certification and labeling program that recognizes and promotes sustainable fishing practices, with the main objective of combating overfishing and ensuring the oceans’ health and fish populations in the long term.
The three principles of the MSC Standard
Fisheries can be certified as sustainable only if they comply with the three principles of the MSC Standard:
- They must leave enough fish in the sea so that populations can reproduce and fishing can continue indefinitely.
- They must minimize the impact on the marine ecosystem, including habitats and non-target species.
- They must have a good management system in place and comply with relevant local and international laws and regulations, demonstrating the ability to adapt to changing conditions.
Certification and evaluation of the MSC Standard
The evaluation of compliance with the MSC Standard is carried out by accredited independent certifiers, Conformity Assessment Bodies (CABs), through a rigorous and detailed process that can last between 12 to 18 months. Once certification is obtained, it is valid for up to 5 years, during which time the certifier annually carries out audits to examine the continuous compliance with the Standard.
MSC on World Ocean Day
The MSC not only works to ensure sustainable fishing, but also to educate citizens about its importance. That is why every year in June, MSC participates in World Ocean Day, “a global event created by the United Nations that highlights the importance of our ocean and raises awareness of the actions we can all take to protect it.” This year MSC joins this event with an awareness campaign under the motto “Sustainable fishing means…*”, committing to the dissemination of information on good practices of commitment to sustainable fishing to accelerate the achievement of the UN‘s Sustainable Development Goals. You can check all information regarding MSC’s role on sustainable fishing in their official website https://www.msc.org/world-ocean-day-2024
In conclusion, the MSC seal is a reliable indicator of responsible and sustainable fishing practices widely recognized and used globally. At Pujadó Solano our products have the blue seal and thus we are united with the purpose of protecting our oceans. Today we join the World Ocean Day goal of disseminating information about sustainable fishing, both through our blog and on our social networks.
