Today, World Oceans Day, we wanted to take the opportunity to tell you how Pujadó Solano contributes to the protection of the oceans by committing to sustainable fishing.
The MSC sustainable fishing label
To do this, we buy fish from fisheries certified with the MSC (Marine Stewardship Council) sustainable fishing label. This is an international certification and labeling program that recognizes and promotes sustainable fishing practices, with the main objective of combating overfishing and ensuring the long-term health of oceans and fish populations.
The three principles of the MSC Standard
For a fishery to be certified as sustainable, it must meet the three principles of the MSC Standard:
- It must leave enough fish in the sea so that populations can reproduce and fishing can continue indefinitely.
- It must minimize its impact on the marine ecosystem, including habitats and non-target species.
- It must have a good management system in place and comply with relevant laws and regulations, demonstrating the ability to adapt to changing conditions and maintain long-term sustainability.
Certification and evaluation of the Standard
Compliance with the Standard is assessed by independent accredited certifiers, Audit Entities, through a rigorous and detailed process that can last between 12 and 18 months. Once obtained, the certification is valid for up to 5 years, during which the certifier conducts annual audits to examine ongoing compliance with the Standard.
IV Seas For Ever Week
The MSC not only works to ensure sustainable fishing, but also to educate the public about the importance of sustainable fishing and ocean conservation. That is why, on the occasion of World Oceans Day, from June 3 to 9, the “IV Seas For Ever Week” is being held, this year under the slogan “Sustainable fishing means…*”. This is an awareness campaign in which brands, distributors, manufacturers, scientific and educational institutions, and the media participate, united in disseminating information about “good practices for commitment to sustainable fishing to accelerate the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).” In addition, a series of activities open to public participation will take place, which can be consulted on the official MSC website: https://www.msc.org/es/acerca-de-msc/iv-semana-mares-para-siempre-2024 In conclusion, the MSC label is a reliable indicator of responsible and sustainable fishing practices, widely recognized and used globally.
