When we talk about the Northern Albacore tuna fishing season, we are referring to the season or campaign for catching Northern Albacore tuna (Thunnus alalunga), also known as white tuna, in the Cantabrian Sea, in northern Spain. It is a highly valued tuna species for its quality and flavor.
The fishing season takes place during the summer months, generally between June and October, when these fish migrate from the Central Atlantic to the waters of the Cantabrian Sea, in search of warmer temperatures and food.
Hook-and-line fishing is used, a traditional method known as live bait fishing. Fishermen use live bait such as anchovies or sardines, which are kept in livewells on board the boats, to attract the tuna. This type of fishing is environmentally friendly as it allows tuna to be caught one by one with a rod, without accidentally harming other species.
