Human rights and peace: 70 years later, more fashionable than ever.

Every year on September 21, the International Day of Peace is celebrated around the world.

But what did the United Nations intend by declaring this day and these statutes?

This date and this day are dedicated to strengthening  the ideals of peace, both among all nations and all peoples and among the members of each of them.

The measures that were taken to achieve the social and economic development of all people in the world and guarantee the protection of their rights, with a single objective: world peace.

Also something very relevant is the protection of the environment, that is, the objectives for sustainable development.

The Sustainable Goals cover a wide range of subjects, including:  poverty, hunger, health, education, climate change, gender equality, water, sanitation, electricity, environment and social justice.

Each and every word reflected in this paragraph is used daily because the changing world seems to have no limit to its greed, and therefore does not protect the environment or its inhabitants.

Another objective is peace, justice and strong institutions for all, and in the same way, this would mean striving to facilitate access to justice for all people and create effective, responsible institutions that do not exclude anyone at any level.

A peaceful society is one in which justice and equality are within everyone’s reach.

Bullying, gender violence and verbal violence are scourges of our society that we must fight against with all our might, which is why the Universal Declaration of Human Rights is so important for all of us.

Reflecting on how we treat our colleagues at work, in our environment or even the opposite sex, should make us modify in any case behaviors that go against these objectives for the defense of peace and human rights.

Regarding the environment, our daily actions should reflect that we are involved in the fight to improve our surroundings and also that, to the extent that we can, we fight for social justice and equality.

After  70 years we can say that this universal declaration is more necessary than ever.

“It is time for all peoples and nations to act in line with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which recognizes the inherent dignity and equal and inalienable rights of all people. This year marks the 70th anniversary of this historic document.” — António Guterres, Secretary-General

For world peace, “Human rights are the rights of everyone.”
